Cash bonus for top "Driver of the Centuries"

Cash bonuses totaling $1,750 have been posted for the three drivers scoring the most USAC points in the two upcoming 100-lap dirt-track USAC National Midget Car races at Putnamville, Ind. Saturday and Terre Haute, Ind. July 3.

A $1,000 bonus awaits the driver earning the most points in Saturday night's "Put 100" and the "Hut 100" seven weeks later at Terre Haute, Ind. The driver scoring the second highest total receives $500 and the third-highest point total is worth $250. A driver "sweeping" the two races could earn total prizes of $9,000.

Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. is the current USAC National Midget Car point leader primarily as a result of victories in the two pavement openers at Phoenix, Ariz. and Anderson, Ind. but Saturday's race at Putnamville is the first on the dirt for this year's series.

Tracy Hines won last year's 100-lapper at Putnamville and last year's October Midget race at Terre Haute and appears to be the early favorite for the $1,000 bonus. The only other driver with USAC Midget car victories at each track is Tony Elliott of Kokomo, Ind.

Saturday's activities at Lincoln Park Speedway get underway with practice at 5:30 pm. Qualifying is slated at 6 and the first race is at 7.
