Darland to race at Eldora this weekend

USAC Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car Series point leader Dave Darland of Lincoln, Ind. plans to compete in this weekend's USAC "doubleheaders" at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio.

Darland, who suffered a torn right calf muscle in a Sprint car accident June 13 at Schererville, Ind., is looking forward to returning to competition after missing last weekend's Coors Light Silver Bullet Series race at Fountain, Colo. A.J. Fike subbed for Dave at Pikes Peak International Raceway and finished a creditable 10th.

"I'm still sore but the doctors have released me to race again," says Dave, who also ranks fourth in the USAC WorldCom National Midget Series and eighth in the Coors Light Silver Bullet Series. standings. "I've been to a therapist here in Kokomo (Ind.) and they have given me ultrasound and massage therapy and I feel like I can be competitive at Eldora."

A 25-lap WorldCom National Midget Car and 30-lap Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car feature conclude each night's actitivies on the 1/2-mile dirt Eldora Speedway, with Saturday night's Midget feature scheduled to be USAC's 2,000th!

Former USAC Sprint Car Champion and three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Johnny Rutherford will serve as the grand marshal for the track's "Oldtimers Weekend" events and make a Friday night appearance. Other former USAC champions are expected to be among those attending the weekend races, which mark the first back-to-back USAC Sprint/Midget Car "doubleheaders" on a dirt track in the club's history.
