SALEM, Ind., Aug. 12 0x2022 Dave Darland, a prime candidate to advance into the Indy Racing Northern Light Series, backed up his USAC MCI WorldCom midget feature victory at Kentucky Speedway Friday night with a similar triumph last night at Salem Speedway.
One of the few drivers who competes in all three of USAC's biggest divisions, Darland is currently leading both the USAC MCI WorldCom midget point standings and the USAC Stoops Freightliner sprint car point standings. The Lincoln, Ind.-based star is also tenth in the USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet point standings.
Friday night's race, part of the Jani-King Short Track Triple Header, was a preliminary to Sunday's Belterra Casino Indy 300 Indy Racing event. Darland won his 10-lap heat and started third in the feature in Steve Lewis's Team ASE Beast Ford #9. He took the lead on lap nine by passing Chris Hettinger and was never again headed.
Tracy Hines, Dave Steele, A.J. Fike and Bobby East rounded out the top five in the Kentucky race, held on the quarter-mile track inside the 1.5-mile oval.
Saturday night at Salem Darland was the fastest of the 21 qualifiers, taking only 16.374 seconds to tour the half-mile, 33-degree banked paved oval in Lewis's Beast. He took the lead with only five laps to go and beat two Aarons - Fike and Pollock - to the line. A.J. Fike, Aaron's older brother, was fourth and Jimmy McCune rounded out the top five.
Darland is competing in a race in Kokomo, Ind. tonight.
The Aug. 24-25 weekend will be another busy one for the popular Darland. He'll run in USAC MCI WorldCom midget races and USAC Stoops Freightliner sprint car races that Friday and Saturday at Granite City, Ill., which is near Gateway International Raceway.
He'll be at Gateway too, as he'll run in a USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet race on Saturday that is being staged as a preliminary to the Indy Racing headliner the following day.
Darland's next USAC Stoops Freightliner sprint car race is at Anderson Speedway in Anderson, Ind. this coming Friday, Aug. 17. This coming Saturday he'll compete in the USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet race at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ill.
