CRA RETURNS TO PERRIS SATURDAY
MANZY WINNER GARDNER AIMS FOR 5 STRAIGHT FQS
Defending USAC/CRA Sprint Car Champion Damion Gardner of Concord, Calif. leads Cory Kruseman of Ventura, Calif. by seven points going into this Saturday night's 30-lap race at Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway. The two have finished 1-2 the last two races and neither has finished no worse than fourth in four 2006 starts!
Gardner scored a sensational last-lap, last-turn victory in last Saturday night's 30-lapper at Manzanita Speedway in Phoenix, Ariz. He trailed Rickie Gaunt for 29 laps, then took advantage of a Gaunt miscue in turn four to slip by for the win, his first this season. Kruseman also slipped by for second ahead of Gaunt, Josh Wise and Mike Spencer.
This Saturday Gardner and his Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply/Arizona Race Mart Eagle/Shaver will try to maintain their qualifying supremacy and point lead at the 1/2-mile dirt Perris oval which has yielded 14 of Gardner's 24 career USAC/CRA victories. In fields of 33, 41, 58 and 36 cars respectively this year he has yet to be out-qualified! Last year he posted the fastest qualifying time on 22 occasions, a single-season USAC Sprint car record.
Challenging Gardner and Kruseman for a podium position at Perris will be 2004 USAC/CRA Sprint Car Champion Rip Williams of Yorba Linda, Calif., seeking his 100th sanctioned sprint car triumph. Williams was the victor at Perris in February, while Kruseman won the last Perris outing, earlier this month.
