JONES TARGETS CHARLOTTE'S "MOPAR NATIONALS" AS HE CONTINUES QUEST FOR NATIONAL TITLE
Levi Jones of Olney, Ill. will take a three-race winning streak into next Wednesday night's "Mopar Sprint Car Nationals" at The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C. One year ago he recorded his initial USAC feature triumph at the 4/10-mile banked dirt oval, beating 2003 Charlotte winner Troy Cline to the checkered flag!
Jones hopes to become the sixth driver in USAC Sprint car history to win four straight National races. Larry Dickson set the record of six straight in 1968. Parnelli Jones won five straight in 1961 and Pancho Carter (1976), Steve Chassey (1979) and Rick Hood (1985) followed with four in a row. It hasn't happened in the last 20 years, a stretch of 524 races!
Jones leads Dave Darland by 81 points going into the Charlotte race. Darland has a single win this year compared to Jones' four. A total of eight feature events remain on the 2005 calendar.
Darland is a USAC "Triple Crown Champion," having claimed titles in all three USAC National Series (Silver Crown, Sprint and Midget), while Jones is seeking his first National title.
Jay Drake, who ranks third in points and could challenge the leaders by season's end, won the title last year.
The Charlotte field should rank as one of this year's most competitive. Practice is scheduled to start at 6:30 pm and racing gets under way at 8.
