Jason McCord of Anderson, Ind. scored his first Stoops Freightliner USAC Sprint Car victory of the year Saturday night as the series made its inaugural appearance at the 1/2-mile paved Hawkeye Downs Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The race marked the first USAC event in the Hawkeye state since the Midget Cars raced at Cedar Rapids in 1989. McCord led all 30 laps in his Hat World/PayLess Super Markets/Roundy's/Weidner Chevrolet Special to beat Billy Puterbaugh, Jr., Dave Darland, Dave Steele and defending series champion Tony Elliott. Turbines, Inc. fast qualifier Eric Gordon did not finish the 30-lapper, finishing 15th. Darland's finish increased his series point lead over runner-up Tracy Hines, who finished eighth Saturday night. The series now prepares for this Saturday night's events at the 1/2-mile dirt Tri-City Speedway in Franklin, Pa., the first appearance of the Stoops Freightliner Sprint Cars in the Keystone State since their 1996 outing at Williams Grove Speedway. Practice at Tri-City begins at 5 pm. Qualifying gets under way at 6 and racing commences at 7. A 30-lap feature is on tap.
