Buckeye Nationals midgets to Yeley (2) & both Fikes.
J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz. captured two of last week's "Buckeye Nationals" USAC Midget Car features in Ohio while the Fike brothers, A.J. and Aaron, took the others.
Aaron Fike of Galesburg, Ill. scored a sensational last-lap victory at Attica Raceway Park Wednesday night and A.J. emerged with Friday night's win at Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio after disqualification of two cars which finished ahead of him.
Aaron trailed series point leader Dave Darland for 29 laps, then made his winning move on the final lap in his RFMS/McGladrey & Pullen Pink Ford/Beast. Darland finished second ahead of Road-to-Indy fast qualifier Jay Drake, Tracy Hines and Yeley. Aaron flipped during qualifying and was relegated to the team's back-up car, which turned out to be a winner. Brad Kuhn of Indianapolis, Ind. suffered a mild concussion in a heat race flip but was released from Willard (OH) Mercy Hospital after treatment.
Yeley led all 30 laps of Friday night's race at Fremont Speedway, part of a "clean sweep" of the Fremont events which also included a 30-lap Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car race. Yeley drove the Ford/ASE/Performance Racing Industry Pink Ford/Beast to the win over Bobby East, fast qualifier Shane Hollingsworth, Darland and James Chesson.
A.J. Fike led the first 10 and last four laps at Lima, Ohio Friday night but had originally finished third in his RFMS/McGladrey & Pullen Pink Ford/Beast. He was moved to first after the cars of Dave Darland and J.J. Yeley failed to pass post-race technical inspection and were disqualified. Jerry Coons, Jr. officially finished second, ahead of Brian Gerster, East and Dave Strickland, Jr. Tracy Hines was the fastest qualifier.
Yeley returned to lead all but the first lap of Saturday night's 25-lapper at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, beating Tracy Hines, Steve Paden, Aaron Fike and Ted Hines to the checkered flag. Darland, the night's fastest qualifier, flipped during a heat race but escaped injury.
Yeley's performances moved him past Darland into the lead in the USAC National Midget Car Series standings by six points going into the 51st "Hut Hundred" July 3 at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track.
