East Takes Toledo Sprints; Scores Three Top-5s in Three Races
Brownsburg, Ind. (July 5, 2009) -- Bobby East drove the Klatt Enterprises No. 5 Ford Racing Technology/Beast Chassis/ClubSport Esslinger Ford-powered Beast to his second USAC National Sprint Car Series win of the 2009 season by chasing down leader Jacob Wilson and squeezing between him and the inside pit wall in turn one with five laps remaining in the 50-lap feature at Toledo Speedway on Friday night. East, who qualified second, picked up his first Sprint Car win of the year in May at Anderson Speedway.
"That pass on (Jacob) Wilson was just a prayer," East said in victory lane. "I drove it down in there and hoped he saw me and hoped the car would stick and it did. It's awesome to win here like this. We had to work for it, that's for sure. We spent a lot of laps racing with the 67 (Darren Hagen) and once we were able to get past him we started chasing down Wilson. I thought I had him but then the caution came out before we got back to the line to complete the lap and we had to drop back into second. I was real careful not to use up the right rear racing with Hagen so we'd have enough to get up there and race for the win. This car is just awesome, I love when I get a chance to race it because I know we've got a real good shot to win and that's just what we did here tonight."
East also finished fourth in the 50-lap USAC National Midget Car Series feature at Toledo just before his Sprint Car victory.
"The Midgets are all just so equal out there," East said. "It's a big fast track and we're all running about the same speed so you really have to work hard to make up positions. We started tenth and were able to race up to fourth. I think we could have challenged the guys in front of us a little more but the exhaust came off the car and we lost all the torque in the engine because of it. But after the luck we've had in the Midget the past month or so, we'll take fourth."
East also finished third in the 40-lap "Rich Vogler Classic" for Sprint Cars on Thursday night at Winchester Speedway.
"We had a great Fourth of July weekend," East said. "We're out there racing for wins and top-fives. Our Beast chassis were awesome all weekend and we had a ton of power out of our Ford engines. I'm really proud of all the guys that work on these cars for us, they bust their tails in the shop and here at the track. Getting the win here at Toledo and racking up these top-fives is because of them."
Beast Chassis Note: Bobby Santos III continued his impressive hot streak in Beast Chassis by winning the 50-lap USAC National Midget Car Series feature at Toledo Speedway on Friday night. Santos has now collected four USAC checkered flags in the past two weeks: two Sprint Car victories and two Midget car victories, all aboard championship-winning Beast Chassis. Beast swept the weekend USAC action as Tracy Hines scored the National Sprint Car victory at Winchester Speedway and Bobby East closed the weekend out with the Sprint Car win at Toledo.
