East Scores Fifth-Place Finish at K'zoo
Brownsburg, Ind (June 23, 2008) - After finishing a disappointing 17th in the USAC National Midget Series race at Iowa Speedway, Bobby East rebounded by driving the Klatt Enterprises' No. 5 Ford Racing Technology/Beast Chassis/ClubSport Beast to a solid fifth-place finish in Saturday's USAC National Sprint Car Series feature at Kalamazoo Speedway.
East started eighth at Iowa and darted into the lead by lap 12, but the lead was short lived as engine troubles sent him to the pits shortly afterward.
"We had the car to win at Iowa," East said. "We knew going in we were going to be very good there and Evan Avart and the guys really gave me a strong car. We drove up to the lead and I think we could have stayed there and got a win. Just as we were passing for the lead we had troubles with the engine. We would have liked to at least have had a top-five finish in the Midget race in Iowa since we're running for the championship in that division, but the past couple of weeks there have been difficult. We're fighting some engine issues in the Midget right now and I know the guys are working hard to get them solved so we can get back into the fight for the championship. As good as our Sprint car is, we know every time we unload we're going to have a chance to win. As a racer you aren't happy with a fifth-place run because you want to be up there fighting for the win. So we're a little disappointed not to be in victory lane with the trophy but we're happy to get back on the right track. Hopefully we've got the monkey off our back. We've got some really good tracks ahead of us so I think as long as our luck is turned around we'll be okay."
After the race at Iowa Speedway, East now sits sixth in the USAC National Midget standings.
East takes to the 3/4-mile Richmond International Raceway on June 26 for a USAC Silver Crown and Sprint Car doubleheader then heads to Toledo Speedway for a Sprint Car and Midget doubleheader on July 3.
Beast Notes: Bobby Santos III swept the weekend USAC action in Beast Midget and Sprint chassis. Santos won Friday night's 30-lap USAC National Midget Series race at Iowa Speedway and backed it up Saturday with a victory in the 40-lap Sprint car feature.
