INDIANAPOLIS (May 7, 2001) -- A week after a 12th place finish in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, the Andretti-Helmling Team CARQUEST USAC Silver Bullet team with driver Bud Kaeding returns to action this Saturday in the Coca-Cola 100, presented by Crystal Flash, a USAC Silver Bullet series, 100-lap event on the .686-mile oval at Indianapolis Raceway Park, near Indianapolis, Indiana
The CARQUEST USAC Silver Bullet team with driver Bud Kaeding rebounded from a disappointed start at Phoenix early this year by finishing 12th last week in the 100-mile USAC event at Nazareth Speedway. While the finish was strong, team co-owner Rollie Helmling wasn't happy with it and looks for a better finish this week at IRP.
"Actually it was kind of a lackluster performance," said Helmling, who co-owns the team, along with a CARQUEST store in Sullivan, Indiana, with John Andretti. "We certainly want to do better. We had a few teething problems with a new engine and really didn't get going until qualifying. We qualified 19th which wasn't what we wanted either. Bud drove a smart, heads up race as Nazareth is an extremely difficult track to pass on. I believe we would have had a top 10 finish, but as Bud was slowing to avoid a crash on lap 80 he got rear ended and the car got shortened up by at least a foot. We were able to hang on with the "ugly car" and lost a few positions to wind up 12th. We'll have it all fixed in time for IRP and ESPN2 this Saturday night, complete with a new tail and rear bumper."
The Coca-Cola 100, presented by Crystal Flash, features a twin bill with the 100-lap USAC Silver Bullet Series feature and the Baby Grand Stock Car Association, which will run a 20-lap event. Spectator gates for the May 12 event open at 4 p.m., with racing scheduled to commence at 7 p.m. The Coca-Cola 100, which runs every year the same day as the Indianapolis 500 pole day, will be televised by ESPN2 live from 9:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. ET. Along with the CARQUEST team, the ESPN2 coverage will also feature the popular CARQUEST Cage Cam.
