STEELE WIRE-TO-WIRE IN ANDERSON'S "GLEN NIEBEL CLASSIC"

Aaron Pierce of Muncie, Ind. emerged from Sunday's "Glen Niebel Classic" at Anderson (Ind.) Speedway with a two-point lead over Anderson race winner Dave Steele in the USAC Valvoline National Sprint Car standings going into the April 24 "Rich Vogler Classic" at the Winchester (Ind.) Speedway.

Steele, of Tampa, Fla., led all 50 laps in his Northside Propane/Sun Welding Beast/Mopar to win the "Niebel" feature at the 1/4-mile paved Anderson oval, opening the 2005 Valvoline National Sprint Car campaign. He was trailed to the checkered flag by Pierce, Aaron Fike, fast qualifier Bobby East and Jay Drake.

The victory was Steele's 25th in series competition. He now has victories in USAC Silver Crown and Sprint racing this season on his way to what would be a fifth consecutive USAC season with at least one victory in each of the three National series.

The grand re-opening of the 1/2-mile paved Winchester oval April 24 will resume the great tradition of the "Rich Vogler Classic," honoring the late driver who posted more total feature victories than any driver in USAC history (170) before his untimely death in 1990.
