Kasey Kahne of Enumclaw, Wash., USAC's 2000 National Midget Car Champion, returns to the series Wednesday night to compete in the "Bosma 50" at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway.
Kahne, whose second-place finish behind Michael Lewis at Anderson in 2000 came in what many believe to be the closest finish in USAC history, was that year's National Midget Champion and Silver Crown "Rookie of the Year." He has 11 career USAC National Midget victories to his credit and this year ranks 13th in the NASCAR Busch Series.
Kahne will team at Anderson with J.J. Yeley of Phoenix, Ariz., who leads the USAC National Midget Car Series standings going into the "Bosma 50." Yeley has an opportunity to make USAC history with a single-season all-time record 20th USAC feature victory. J.J. has 19 to date, which ties the 1961 record set by A.J. Foyt, tied in 1988 by Sleepy Tripp and 2000 by Jay Drake. The Steve Lewis-owned team also features 2001 USAC National Midget "Rookie of the Year" Bobby East.
Anderson's practice gets under way at 4 pm, with qualifying slated at 5:30 and racing set to start at 7:30. The feature is 50 laps on the 1/4-mile paved oval.
Mansfield (Ohio) Motorsports Speedway hosts its inaugural USAC "doubleheader" on Saturday night, featuring both the USAC Midgets and Sprint Cars. A pair of 30-lap feature events are scheduled on the 1/2-mile pavement, with practice starting at 6 pm and qualifying at 7. Racing gets under way at 8.
Yeley's National Midget Car point lead over Tracy Hines stands at just 18 points going into this week's races. Each is trying to put the lid on a USAC Triple Crown career, both previously having won USAC Silver Crown and Sprint Car titles.
