Steele Secures Record-Tying 5th "Little 500" Pole

Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. nearly broke the existing track records on Thursday, then withstood final challenges Friday to win the pole starting spot for Saturday night's 56th PayLess/Delco Remy "Little 500" Sprint car race at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway. Rains forced a suspension of Thursday's time trials, which concluded Friday morning.

The pole is Steele's fifth in the prestigious 500-lap classic, tying Frank Riddle's record. His four-lap time of 44.831 seconds fell short of Gary Fedewa's 1998 record of 44.262.and his best lap of 11.135 seconds just missed Bentley Warren's 1995 record of 11.018. Steele will pilot the Pro-Coat/Northside Propane Hurricane/Gaerte in the classic event.

Steele's previous poles came in 1996, 2000, 2002 and 2003 and he won the race in 1996. Front-row drivers Levi Jones and Cory Kruseman are race rookies, two of seven who made the 33-car starting lineup. Five former race winners, including Steele, Eric Gordon, Jeff Bloom, Bentley Warren and Chet Fillp are in the field.

Defending race winner Eric Gordon, who is seeking a record sixth victory and record-tying fourth in a row, qualified fifth.

Saturday night's race starts at 8 pm Anderson time.
