SILVER CROWN CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES Pepsi-Cola "Sumar Classic 100" is 200th Silver Crown Race

The Pepsi-Cola "Sumar Classic 100" at the Terre Haute (Ind.) Action Track Friday night will mark the 200th event in USAC Silver Crown Championship Series history.

Jason Leffler of Long Beach, Calif., last year's USAC National Midget Champion, leads the series standings but continues his search for his first victory. He nearly won the series opener at Orlando, Fla., running out of fuel on the white-flag lap, then added a second-place finish at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in May. He was also the fastest qualifier at Indianapolis Raceway Park in May before finishing fifth there.

Indy Racing League veteran Brian Tyler ranks second in the standings and Jimmy Sills, the only three-time series champion, is third. Tyler won the series opener at Orlando and followed with a second-place finish at Phoenix, Ariz.

Donnie Beechler of Springfield, Ill., though will wear the favorite's tag at Terre Haute. The winner of the only 1998 Silver Crown dirt-track contest to date, at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in May, he is the defending "Sumar Classic 100" champion and also won the race in 1995. He also holds the 1-lap track qualifying record of 21.263 seconds drivers will shoot for when qualifying starts at 5:45 p.m. Practice is scheduled for 4:30 and the 15-lap qualifying race gets the green flag at 7:30. The 100-lap feature starts at 8:30.

Silver Crown Point Standings: 1-Jason Leffler-245; 2-Brian Tyler-207; 3-Jimmy Sills-193; 4-Ryan Newman-187; 5-Dave Steele-171; 6-J.J. Yeley-162; 7-Dave Darland-158; 8-Jack Hewitt-145; 9-Davey Hamilton-138; 10-Russ Gamester-138.
