Critter Malone of Indianapolis, Ind., still smarting from his loss in the recent "Summer Sizzle '99" at the 16th Street Speedway, returned to the 1/4-mile dirt track Saturday night and won the 30-lap USAC Midget Car feature event in his Red Top Rentals/Stoops Freightliner/Laura Kopetsky/Triax Chevy. Malone caught Randy Koch on the 28th lap and led the final three to beat Steve Knepper and Koch to the checkered flag. Defending series champion Michael Lang led the first eight laps before yielding to Koch, but Lang failed to finish the 30-lapper. Malone led the first 24 laps of the July 10 "Summer Sizzle '99" feature before flipping, ending his bid for that night's $20,000 first prize. Series point leader Ron Smoker was 13th in Saturday night's race but still holds a 15-point lead over Malone in the standings going into this Saturday night's 30-lapper at the Indianapolis track. Dennis LaCava and Ralph Liguori, who flipped during Saturday night's events, were transported to Indianapolis' Methodist Hospital for precautionary checks.
