4 "TEAMS" EYE USAC SPRINT HISTORY AT LAWRENCEBURG
The first two USAC National Sprint Car races this season have produced 1-2 "team-car" finishes. That's the first time it's happened back-to-back in the 46-year history of USAC National Sprint Car competition!
At least four "teams" appear poised to try to extend the record when the series visits Lawrenceburg (Ind.) Speedway Saturday night. One team -- Tony Stewart Racing -- has entered three cars in an attempt to record USAC's first-ever National Sprint Car 1-2-3 "sweep."
Dynamics, Inc. teammates Jerry Coons Jr. and Tracy Hines finished 1-2 at Eldora Speedway April 1 and Walker/Guiducci Racing teammates Dave Darland and Dave Steele ran 1-2 at Anderson Speedway April 9.
Defending USAC National Sprint and Midget Champs Levi Jones and Josh Wise will be joined by Kyle Nicholas in the three Stewart entries. Saturday's Lawrenceburg event will also feature R & B Racing teammates Mat Neely and Justin Marvel, Keith Kunz Motorsports teammates Cory Kruseman and Bryan Clauson and most likely Roberts Motorsports teammates Kevin Huntley and Dickie Gaines.
In 1,280 USAC National Sprint Car races since 1961 only 11 have resulted in 1-2 "team" victories. Stewart's team has accounted for three with drivers J.J. Yeley, Kruseman, Jay Drake and Steele, as did the Sherman Armstrong team, with drivers Chuck Gurney, Tom Bigelow, Greg Leffler and Gary Bettenhausen. Drivers Bob Wente and Greg Weld gave the Dunseth/Leffler Racing team USAC's first National Sprint Car 1-2 finish in 1967 and Weld and Bruce Walkup repeated the feat for the same team later in the year at Oklahoma City. Drivers Eddie Leavitt and Ron Shuman gave Don Siebert a 1-2 finish at Reading, Pa. in 1977, while Johnny Vance drivers Steve Kinser and Danny Smith were1-2 at Eldora in 1982 and Gratton Motorsports drivers Hines and Steele were 1-2 at Indianapolis Raceway Park in 2000.
