Tomy Drissi, driver of the no. 5 Stuck On You, The Movie Jaguar XKR, finished third after starting today's Trans-Am race at the back of the grid after missing the qualifying session due to damaged suspension as a result of contact in the previous practice session...his first podium finish this season...best finish of the season...
NOTE 1 -- TROIS-RIVIERES STATS...Drissi has only two previous starts here...In 2002, he qualified ninth and finished third, his best finish of his 2002 season.
NOTE 2 -- BACKGROUND STATS...Ranks 10th in the points standings...In 2003, has two top-ten finishes at Lime Rock and Cleveland and today's third place finish in Trois-Rivieres...Voted "Most Improved Driver" for 2000...Scored his first and only Trans-Am win at Long Beach in 2000...Won the "Rookie of the Year" title in 1999.
On his race today... "I really enjoy this track and the Trois-Rivieres fans. They bring out the best in me. I finished third here last year, my best finish last season, and now I finish third again, my best this year. Next year, I want the top spot.
"I've got to say thank you to my Rocketsports crew. We've been really frustrated this year, we've had some bad luck, and this was just the boost we needed. We missed a few podiums this year that should have probably been ours and it's good to be back.
On his decision to pit and change all four tires... "It was part of our strategy. We talked about if we got a caution and we were eighth to tenth on the lead lap that we'd come in and change tires. My tires weren't used up, but taking on the new rubber made a difference. We gave up two positions on the track and it bought us a podium finish. It was a good move by the team...and I'll take a little credit for it, too.
"Coming from the back, well, to be humbled is one thing. But a little insight about me, it makes me think I'm more of a professional driver that I didn't loose my cool, I was patient, and took my time. Today made me a little bit better as a driver."
POST-RACE FINAL NOTE: The No. 5 Jaguar XKR failed post-race inspection, violating rule 2.10: "Ground Clearance." Drissi received the following penalty: forfeiture of all driver and team owner points earned at this event; loss of all prize money earned at this event; and a $2,000 fine, of which $1,000 is suspended.
