GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Brian Simo, of Carlsbad, Calif., posted a top time of 1:16.244 (74.602 mph) and will front a 30-car BFGoodrich Tires Trans-Am Series field in Sunday’s 64-lap, 101.12-mile West Michigan Grand Johnson Controls 100. “This will be an interesting race,” said Simo. “Paul (Gentilozzi) will be pushing very hard, and I’m sure it will come down to the last lap. With 30 cars, traffic will be a huge issue, and how you work the traffic is very important. We'll start lapping cars around lap eight or so, and how cleanly you get by could be all the difference.” Simo, driving the No. 2 Valvoline Ford Mustang Cobra, recorded his eighth career pole, and sixth of 1999, while Paul Gentilozzi, in the No. 1 Johnson Controls/HomeLink Chevrolet Corvette, qualified second. “We weren't fast enough,” said Gentilozzi, who started on the pole in last year ’s West Michigan Grand Prix. “I made some mistakes. I'm not 100 percent up to speed in the Corvette, and I played it conservative in qualifying. On my fastest lap I came up on a lapped car and had to go around him, and that cost me some time.” Michael Lewis, in the No.1 2 AmeriSuites Mustang Cobra, qualified third, followed by G.J. Mennen, in the No. 4 Smith Eye Wear Mustang Cobra, and Chris Neville, in the No. 88 Tommy Bahama Mustang Cobra. Mennen was the only Fast Five Qualifier who has not raced on the 13-turn, 1.58-mile Grand Rapids street circuit. “The learning curve is very steep in a rookie season,” said Mennen, who scored his first podium finish three weeks ago at the Detroit Grand Prix’s Johnson Controls 100 Trans-Am. “At the start of the year we were on the bottom of the curve, and now we're a ways up. This track is tight, but it is very interesting and technical. The people are doing a fine job here and it’s fun. I'm looking forward to the race.”
