St. Petersburg, FL (Feb 20) -- The 2003 Trans-Am season is about to begin on the streets of St Petersburg, Florida. The race will be run on Sunday February 23rd at 4 PM EDT, and tape delayed broadcast at 5:30 on SPEED channel.
Among the top contenders will be Randy Ruhlman in the Preformed Line Products/Coyote Closure #49 Corvette. Ruhlman, who is making his 127th start in Trans-Am, will be driving for team owner Jim Derhaag. Ruhlman, the winner of the 2002 "Most Improved Driver of the Year" award and a street course specialist, feels confident that this course and the new team will continue to bring the success of the 2002 season.
"It looks like a very fast course. There are some corners that look like they could sucker you into thinking that they are flat out, so it could be wild out here. I think we will be very fast here at St. Pete. I love this race. I came here the first time in Corvette Challenge and have run every year the race has been here since. It is wonderful that the race has returned to St Pete. The event seems to be running very smoothly; it is great to be back in the Bay area," says Ruhlman.
The event will be part of the return of the Grand Prix of St Petersburg event on February 21st-23rd in the downtown streets of St Petersburg. Practice on track begins at 8 AM on Friday Feb 21st, with a second practice at 4:40PM. Qualifying for the Trans-Am grid will begin at 11:30 AM on Saturday 2/22. There will also be a morning warm-up on Sunday before the 4PM start of the 57 Lap (75 minute) race.
Drivers of the Trans-Am series will be actively participating in the local community, including a joint venture with the CART drivers in a visit to the local all children's hospital on Saturday at 3PM. Trans-Am drivers will include Randy Ruhlman, Mike Lewis, Stu Haynes, and John Miller.
