Paul Gentilozzi, driver of the no. 3 Johnson Controls Jaguar XKR, was fourth in qualifying with a time of 1:22:808 for tomorrow's Trans-Am race...his eighth "fast five" appearance this season...his 112 career "fast five' start.
NOTE 1 - Gentilozzi has seven previous starts at Road Atlanta, has two top-five finishes, but has never won here...In 1999, the last time Trans-Am raced here, he qualified fourth, started last (30th) because of a technical penalty, worked his way to the front, led several laps, but retired early with engine problems.
NOTE 2 - 2002 Stats... Second in the points standings...Won the season-opener at Long Beach...Has three additional top-two finishes and seven top-five finishes.
NOTE 3 - Career Stats...Three-time Trans-Am champion (2001, 1999, 1998)...Only driver to have won three championships driving three different marques...Ranks first in all-time Trans-Am top-three (59), top-five (93), and top-ten (123) finishes, lead lap finishes (121), "Fast Five" qualifying starts (112), lead-lap finishes (121), race starts (183)...Has 24 Trans-Am wins.
On his qualifying session... "We made a couple mistakes. We had a baseline lap in just to get a time down. The next lap I had a great lap, a killer lap going. But then I came up on a slower car. He was trying to get out of the way, but as I turned in, he was at the apex of Turn 6. I pushed off the outside and locked up my tires to keep from going off. I took one tire right down to the cord. After that, I lost a little confidence as it bumped its way around. At that point, there was no reason to take a chance and wreck the car to get another position. It'll be just fine for the race."
On his race strategy given the championship points standings... "When the race goes green, you just race. All that other stuff goes out the window. We all have to much ego to just drive around out there."
