MICHAEL LEWIS RETAINS POINTS LEAD PLACING THIRD AT ROAD ATLANTA

(July 25, 1999) - Braselton, GA - BFGoodrich Tires Trans-Am Series Points Leader, Michael Lewis (#12 AmeriSuites Ford Mustang) finished third at the newly configured Road Atlanta course. The results of Road Atlanta mark Lewis' fourth podium finish and fifth Fast Five Qualifying appearances in six events giving him a five-point edge in the Driver's Championship.

Following the Winner's Circle Festivities and Champagne spray, Michael Lewis reported "really, it is my crew in first place in the points because of reliability. Everyone is working at maximum effort and it is totally a team effort. We didn't quite have the pace today that we did at Road America." With temperatures in the 90's and high humidity, the stress and strain on driver and equipment was severe. Lewis kept the #12 AmeriSuites Ford Mustang in second position until the last lap despite temperatures so extreme that he could not touch the shifter without getting burned through the gloves. "I thought under the yellow I may have a chance to catch the leader if I could get a run on him on the restart. After the yellow, we had a fuel pick-up problem and that's how we were passed. It is hard to work that hard all day and lose our position at the end."

"While Michael Lewis is disappointed with his third place finish, we are extremely pleased with his performance and that he stayed at the top of the championship leader board" commented Jon Lewis, American Spirit Racing, President and CEO. "The heat was brutal all weekend and the whole team did a fantastic job and the results prove that."

In the six series races completed to date, Michael Lewis has four podium finishes consisting of one second and three third place finishes; five Fast Five Qualifying appearances in 1999, twelve in his Trans-Am career; and currently, the only driver to finish every lap of all six races.
