HARD WORK PAYS OFF AS SCARALLO TOPS FIRST-ROUND TRANS-AM PRACTICE AT PORTLAND INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY
PORTLAND, Ore. (June 17, 2005) -- A completely rebuilt car, new body work and a lot of blood, seat and tears paid off Friday for Joey Scarallo as the third-year driver set the fastest time in first-round practice for Saturday's Rose City 100 Trans-Am race at Portland International Raceway. Scarallo (No. 06 Group A Wheels/Autotrend Chevrolet Corvette) turned the newly reformatted track in one minute, 14.136 seconds at 95.371 miles per hour.
1978 Trans-Am champion and 1984 Portland Trans-Am winner Greg Pickett was second fastest in the No. 6 Cytomax Jaguar XKR, ahead of rookie Klaus Graf (No. 7 Jaguar R Performance XKR). Randy Ruhlman (No. 49 Preformed Line Products Chevrolet Corvette) and Michael Lewis (No. 12 Autocon Jaguar XKR) completed the top five.
"I'm just excited to have my name at the top of the speed charts; it's great way to start the weekend," said Scarallo, who recorded his best career Trans-Am finish of fourth place during last year's Portland event. "We did a lot with the car between Long Beach and this race and we tested a lot. The testing really helped a lot. The car has literally been completely rebuilt from the ground up.
Scarallo is hoping this momentum will carry him into qualifying.
"The first session was great, but that's only going to last a couple of hours," said Scarallo. "Qualifying is more important. We can still make the car better and I have to be even more focused now. We have to keep working through qualifying and do then do the same thing in race."
Second-round practice is scheduled for this afternoon, at 12:30 p.m., followed by qualifying at 4 p.m. The Rose City 100, Round 2 of the 2005 Trans-Am Championship and part of the G.I. Joes Presents the Champ Car Grand Prix of Portland weekend, is scheduled for Saturday, June 18 at 4 p.m. PDT. Sunday's race will air on a tape-delayed basis, Sunday, June 26 at 1 p.m. EDT on SPEED Channel.
