Michael Lewis fastest in first Long Beach practice session.
Long Beach, CA. (April 12th, 2002): Mike Lewis and the AmericanSpirit AmeriSuites Jaguar was fast right off the trailer as Lewis set the pace for this afternoons first session for Sunday's Johnson Controls 100 here on the streets of Long Beach. The hours of preparation and testing having paid dividends for the AutoCon team out of San Diego, Ca.
"You never know what you have until you can go out and play with the other guys," commented a happy Lewis. "And, they are racing like it matters. Too bad they don't pay anything for the first practice session."
Lewis recorded a time of 1:23.220 on lap 22. Rounding out the top five were Lou Gigliotti in his Corvette, Paul Gentilozzi in his Rocketsports Jaguar XKR. Butch Leitzinger in a Corvette and Boris Said a Ford Mustang. The session was absent of any real problems so there were no caution periods.
"I wish qualifying was tomorrow morning instead of having another practice session," Lewis quipped. "In fact I would have liked this session to have been qualifying. The AmeriSuites Jag is really good right now! We did make some minor changes to make the car better."
There will be second practice session at 8:00 a.m. PT with Fast-Five qualifying scheduled for 4:15 p.m. PT for Sundays race.
When asked about the new 2002 bodywork on his Jaguar, Lewis replied, "I think the car looks good with our color scheme, but I am not sure if I really like this style better than last years version."
Either way Michael Lewis is singing nothing but praise as to how well the 2002 version of the AmeriSuites Jaguar is actually working.
