Trans Am Series champion Brian Simo qualified third on the 29-car grid for Sunday's race at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach (Calif.). The Carlsbad, Calif., driver will start the No. 88 Tommy Bahama Qvale Mangusta behind polesitter Paul Gentilozzi of Lansing, Mich., and Boris Said of Carlsbad. Simo's qualifying time was one minute 23.350 seconds, at a speed of 85.087 miles an hour on the 1.97-mile street circuit.

"The car was a little bit loose and we're wrestling now with what we're going to do for the race," Simo said. "I'm disappointed we didn't get the front row, but our guys will figure it out. It's going to be tight, and I think it will make for a good race."
