(June 16, 2000) The streak of bad breaks that has followed Leighton Reese (Minnetonka, MN) and the Banner Racing team seems to have surfaced yet again in the qualifying run for round 5 of the BFGoodrich Tires Trans-Am Series from Detroit.

In early morning practice sessions, Reese and the Banner Racing entry had been running third quickest behind Paul Gentalozzi and Brian Simo. Gentalozzi would go on to capture the pole later in the day with a qualifying time of 1:33.964 with Simo following closely behind with a time of 1:34.064.

During the late afternoon qualifying session, the bad luck that the Banner Racing Team tried to leave in Minnesota, crept back onto the track. On what would have been Leighton's quick lap, a spark plug wire came loose, resulting in a time of 1:42.098 for Reese, placing him in 31st position on the starting grid for Saturday's race. While Leighton and the Banner Engineering Team are obviously greatly disappointed with the incident in qualifying, hopefully this will be the end of the dark cloud looming over the #66 entry for the weekend.
