(August 18, 2000) Leighton Reese (Minnetonka, MN) and the Banner Racing Team gear up for round seven of the BFGoodrich Tires Trans-Am Series running at the Road America circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Only a short chute from home, about a 5 hour drive, the team headed out Wednesday, August 16, stopping in Waukesha, WI at Powermation, a Banner distributor, to show the car and meet supporters of the Banner Racing Team.
Heading to the track for set-up on Thursday, the day was hampered by rain. When Friday morning came, the weather proved to be beautiful. An early morning practice session ended early as the #17 Derhaag entry, driven by Jerry Kinn, hit a barrier in turn seven. The barrier was broken and needed repaired before sessions could continue, therefore ending the practice session after only 18 minutes. During this run, however, the #66 Banner Racing/Phillips 66 entry was running 4th quickest with a fast time of 2:19.603, a speed of 104.387. Paul Gentalozzi turned fastest lap with a time of 2:14.871, a speed of 108.050.
Qualifying took place late Friday afternoon. "The car has a big push, but is running really well," stated Reese, post qualifying today. "This is one of our favorite tracks, it's just beautiful here. The push is slowing us down a bit, without it, we easily could have had a top five qualifying position. We are going to work on the car a while tonight to get rid of the push and then get the hot rod ready for the race tomorrow."
Reese took 6th place on the qualifying grid. "There are 45 entries this weekend, so racing will be very competitive tomorrow!" states Reese. Reese will start the #66 entry just behind Chris Neville in the #84 car. On the pole for tomorrow's Motorola 220 at Road America is Johnny Miller in the #64 Corvette, with Paul Gentalozzi, Brian Simo, and Randy Ruhlman following respectively.
The Motorola 220 at Road America will take place tomorrow, August 19 at 3:15 Central time, but will be tape delayed on the Speedvision network on August 26th at 9 PM Eastern time.
