Sofuoglu bags fifth Supersport title at Jerez

Turkish rider Kenan Sofuoglu successfully defended his World Supersport title, becoming 2016 champion with one race to spare after winning at Jerez.

He took his sixth win of the season at the Spanish circuit and extended his championship lead by 25 points as teammate and main rival Randy Krummenacher crashed.

Sofuoglu took his first Supersport title in 2007 and, after stepping up to World Superbike for a season, he returned to the support series.

He claimed the title in 2010, 2012 and 2015 and was crowned champion this year for the fifth time.

Sofuoglu's team Puccetti Racing will make a step up to WSBK next year with Krummenacher as its rider.

Jerez proved to be a title-deciding track in the FIM Superstock 1000 category as well, in which Raffaele De Rosa became champion.

He started the round behind Leandro Mercado, who finished eighth in WSBK last year, but the Ducati of the Argentinian rider broke down on the sighting lap and a fifth-place finish from De Rosa was enough for the crown.

In addition, 17-year-old Mika Perez took the European Junior Cup title after finishing second and fourth in the final two races of the season.
