PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (Saturday) Rick Aukland, racking up another big payday, took the lead from Bob Pierce on the 87th lap for a victory worth $15,000 in the Thunder Ridge 100. Aukland, raising his earnings to more than $55,000 over the previous month's racing, took the lead for the fourth time in leading the final 13 laps at the 3/8-mile oval in eastern Kentucky.

Pierce, who led laps 47 through 86 after rallying from his eighth-row starting spot, held on for second place over Scott Bloomquist, who started inside the sixth row. Kevin Weaver finished fourth in his first weekend of racing at Thunder Ridge while polesitter Joe Meadows, who led the first 24 laps and then again on lap 28 and laps 37 through 45, ended up fifth.

Aukland, who began his big-purse hot streak at the Show-Me 100 in West Plains, Mo., last month, led laps 25 through 27, laps 29 through 36 and then lap 46 at Thunder Ridge before Pierce held the point most of the second half of the race. Aukland started outside the second row.

CAR COUNT: 32 late models.

NOTES: Two preliminary nights of racing were also held .... Eddie Carrier Jr. won $1,200 with a feature victory Thursday with 31 cars on hand .... on Friday, Jackie Boggs pocketed $3,000 with a victory with 38 cars in attendance as Scott Bloomquist, Rick Aukland, Steve Francis and Kevin Weaver rounded out the top five .... Paul Harris and Shawn Holliday got provisional starting spots in Saturday's feature.

ROME, Ga. (Sunday) Wendell Wallace moved under Mark Miner on the 44th lap and went on to a $10,000 victory in the Georgia Tool & Equipment Rental 100 at Rome Speedway, his third Hav-A-Tampa Dirt Racing Series victory of the season.

Miner ended up second for his best-ever series finish, while Bill Frye, Skip Arp and points leader Billy Moyer rounded out the top five on the speedy oval in northern Georgia. Ray Cook, Clint Smith, Dale McDowell, Donnie Moran and Earl Pearson Jr. finished sixth through 10th.

"The GRT (chassis) is working good for us right now," Wallace said. "We sure do appreciate their part in putting us here tonight This is a super racetrack and you've got to be at the top of your game here at Rome and on this series."

Miner, who started on the pole after winning the first heat, was left smiling despite his runner-up finish. "We'll get one of these deals before long. We were awfully close tonight, but it'll happen for us soon."

CAR COUNT: 50 late models.

FAST QUALIFIER: Jason Smith, 14.66 seconds (122.783 mph).

FRANCIS STAYS ON HOT STREAK WITH STARS: Steve Francis took the lead from Gary Dalton on the sixth lap at Interstate 79 Speedway then cruised to a $5,000 victory, his third STARS win in a row and fourth in five races on the series. Dalton settled for third place while Gary Stuhler rallied from his 19th starting spot to finish second, and Tim Hitt ended up fourth after starting 21st. Scott Peltz (15.606 seconds) was the fastest among 36 qualifiers. IMCA RACE AT HAWKEYE POSTPONED BY TRACK DAMAGE: Violent weather in Muscatine County, Iowa, over the weekend severely damaged Hawkeye Raceway in Blue Grass, forcing the IMCA-sanctioned Deery Brothers Summer Series event to be postponed until Aug. 12. Winds gusting up to 90 mph snapped utility poles while damaging scoreboard wiring and track lighting. The two-story building that housed the concession stands, press box and track office was also blown to the ground. -------------------------------------------------------------
