JEWELL GETS $2,500 WIN AT PONDEROSA: Mike Jewell of Scottsburg, Ind., survived an early-race skirmish with Johnny Wheeler, then held off Darrell Lanigan by less than a car length for a 50-lap victory worth $2,500 at Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, Ky. Wheeler left the race with a flat tire after three laps and Jewell cruised until the last 10 laps, when Lanigan began applying heavy pressure. There were 24 late models in attendance. JOE KOSISKI WINS NCRA OPENER: Joe Kosiski of Omaha, Neb., got past Delbert Smith late in the race to pocket $2,000 for a 30-lap victory at Hutchinson (Kan.) Raceway Park in the season-opening race of the National Championship Racing Association. There were 31 late models in attendance. PHILLIPS WINS FIRST NCRA/MLRA CHALLENGE: Terry Phillips of Springfield, Mo., captured the first-ever NCRA/MLRA Challenge, leading flag-to-flag in the 30-lap feature at Eighty-One Speedway in Wichita, Kan., to collect the $3,000 first-place purse. It was Phillips' 36th career MLRA win in MLRA's 200th event. There were 45 cars on hand at 3/8-mile track. R.J. CONLEY WINS AMERICAN LATE MODEL SERIES RACE: Polesitter R.J. Conley of Wheelersburg, Ohio, held off Troy Vanderveen then survived a scare at the scales to win $2,000 in the American Late Model Series event Saturday at K-C Raceway near Chillicothe, Ohio. Conley's car weighed just five pounds more than the 2,300-pound requirement. Vanderveen was second in the 30-lap feature followed by Mark Frazier, who transferred to the feature through the consolation, and Kris Patterson, who made his first visit to the track. There were 38 cars in attendance after Friday's ALMS race at Attica, Ohio, rained out. FEATURE (30 laps): (1) R.J. RICKY INGALLS WINS FOURTH STRAIGHT SUPR EVENT: Ricky Ingalls passed Tom Wiggins on the 19th lap at Bayou Speedway in Minden, La., and went on to a 40-lap, $2,000 victory, his fourth in a row on the Southern United Professional Racing Tour. Ingalls started in the eighth position and his victory boosted him to sixth in series points. OGLE WINS 100-LAPPER WORTH $3,000 IN TENNESSEE: Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn., led flag-to-flag for a 100-lap victory worth $3,000 at Tazewell Speedway in eastern Tennessee. Scott Sexton, who spun coming off Turn 4 once, then got up on the frontstretch wall on another occasion, came from the tail twice to finish second at the speedy 3/8-mile oval. Among contenders hampered by tire problems were Roger Best and Steve Smith. There were 32 late models on hand. JACKIE BOGGS INHERITS $4,000 WIN AT THUNDER RIDGE: Charlie Swartz succeeded in passing Jackie Boggs on the high side on the 39th of 40 laps at Thunder Ridge Speedway in Prestonsburg, Ky., but Swartz failed at the scales, coming up 18 pounds shy of the 2,250-pound requirement and handing the $4,000 winner's purse to Boggs. Randle Chupp, who won the previous night's STARS race at Thunder Ridge, could muster only a fifth-place finish. Ronnie Johnson, who finished second in the feature, was the fastest qualifier among 21 cars. The polesitting Miner ran away from the field while Dewayne Hughes finished second and John Jones made a late-race charge to finish third. Miner was the fastest qualifier (14.38 seconds) among 24 entrants. EUNICE WINS NLMS EVENT AT GOLDEN ISLES: Taking the lead when 1996 series champion Ivedent Lloyd Jr. dropped out with engine problems, veteran Cecil Eunice led the final four of 75 laps for a $4,000 victory in the National Late Model Sports Series event at Golden Isles Speedway in Brunswick, Ga. Eunice held off two spirited challenges from Gene Ross on restarts in the waning laps. Lloyd led 53 laps and built leads of as much as half a lap on the field before a rocker arm sent him to the pits.
