VERNON, NY- The racing season is beginning to heat up at Utica-Rome Speedway and this Sunday, June 22nd, will be no different when North Norwich Motors and Rothwell's Used Auto Sales present a regular show of DIRT 358-Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks. It is also Student Night this Sunday, any student with a passing report card will be admitted to the race for free. Also, the popular one on one spectator races will be in action. Gates open at 4 p.m., with racing action set to begin at 6 p.m.
Dale Planck continues to set the pace in the DIRT 358-Modified point standings, despite a last place finish on June 8th. Planck had two wins and two second place finishes up to that point. Vernon's Willy Decker is having his best season to date in the 358-Modified division, currently sitting second in points. Mitch Gibbs sits in third in the standings with Paul Kinney and Todd Burley tied for fourth. Besides Planck, Burley, Jim Rothwell, and 2002 track champion Matt Sheppard have collected feature events so far in 2003. Other drivers looking to break into victory lane include JJ Michaels, Jeff Kotary, Ryan Baye, Kevin Crave, Gus Schmidt, and more.
Paul Carey's consistent finishes have him leading the DIRT Sportsman point chase, but with his win last week, Bill Shantel Jr. has made up most of his point deficent and has moved up into second place. John Scarborough of Vermont currently sits in third with Jim Roberts and Jessica Zemken. Shantel, Tim Clemons (twice), Jamie Christian, and Steve Way have been victorious this season.
Jerry Holmes has been the dominant driver in the DIRT Pro Stocks, netting 4 wins (includes one non-point win). Former track champion Bret Belden, Eric Vanderhoof, Jim Normoyle, and Chad Ray are all giving chase in the season long point battle. The Pro Stocks have attracted full fields almost night. So far in 2003, Holmes and Buddy Hencke have won this season.
In the exciting Pure Stock division, Jim Thomas has grabbed the early point lead on the strength of his 2 wins this season. Art Newman, Dave Pope, Herm Staats, and Waylan Wilczek are all giving chase in the point standings. Thomas, Herm Staats, Rick Trexler, and Chuck Cushman have visited victory lane in the early part of the season.
Once again, the Utica-Rome Speedway brings in the one on one spectator's race, where a fan can take his/her everyday vehicle on tp the track and race against someone. The vehicle must be registered and insured, and the driver must have a helmet to compete. Over 30 fans joined the racing action the time this event was held.
The Utica-Rome Speedway is located in Vernon, NY, just a short trip from Exit 33 of the New York State Thruway.
