DIRT 358-Modified and Sportsman Series Event Highlight Mother'a Day Event at Utica-Rome Speedway
VERNON, NY- On Sunday May 9, Mirabito "The Energy Leader" and Wilber-Duck Chevy/Buick will present the annual Mother's Day special featuring round two of the Turning Stone Casino Super DIRT Series for the 358-Modifieds (100 laps), the opening event of the Sunoco Race Fuels Super DIRT Series for Sportsman, and Four Cylinder Super Stocks. Gates will open at 2:30 p.m., time trials at 5 p.m., and racing scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
Utica-Rome regulars Mitch Gibbs, Todd Burley, Willy Decker, Gus Schmidt, John Ramsey, Brian Weaver, Bobby Varin, Dave Camara, Jeremy Smith, Ronnie Johnson, and more will look to defend their home turf against the top DIRT stars of the Turning Stone Casino SDS. Defending Turning Stone SDS champ Tim Fuller, Brett Hearn, Alan Johnson, Danny Johnson, Pete Bicknell, Chad Brachmann and many more will descend onto the famed Vernon oval looking to steal the checkered flag. Although not expected to be regulars for the 2004 season, defending Utica-Rome Speedway champion Dale Planck and 2002 champion Matt Sheppard will use their experience at the fast half mile to help them to the front. This event fell to rain twice in 2003 with Brett Hearn capturing the fall event to close out the 2003 season at the speedway. Hearn is currently the Turning Stone Casino SDS point leader after his opening round win at the Dirt Track at Lowes Motor Speedway in Charlotte (NC).
Also on tap is the first event of the Sunoco Race Fuels Super DIRT Series for Sportsman. 2003 Utica-Rome Speedway champion and tour regular will lead the strong contingent of local drivers to battle the top Sportsman tour drivers. Regulars such as 2003 Utica-Rome Speedway Sportsman SDS winner Jessica Zemken, Tim Mayne, Butch Reiter, Paul Carey, and more will attempt to hold off tour stars such as Chad Phelps, Eldon Payne, Lance Willix, and Tim Dwyer for the $1,000 payday. This event and the one scheduled for June 27 will count towards the East Region in DIRT's regional format. The third stop on September 12 will be a combined event, with points going towards the overall point standings.
The "Action Track of the East" is located on Route 5 in Vernon (NY), just a short drive from Exit 33 of the New York State Thruway.
