VERNON, NY - New Utica-Rome Speedway DIRT 358 Modified competitor Gus Schmidt Jr. from Liverpool is in critical but improving condition at University Hospital in Syracuse following a work related accident this past Thursday.

Schmidt, 25, was severely injured and currently is in the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital. Known affectionately as "The Heavy Hauler", Schmidt is one of the more popular drivers at Utica-Rome, where he last won a 358-Modified feature on August 1 of last year.

Speedway management has received word that Schmidt is "doing better", however a long road of recovery lies ahead. The Schmidt family is currently very upbeat about the prospects for a recovery.

The staff and management of the New Utica-Rome Speedway ask that everyone pray for Gus Schmidt Jr. and his family in their time of need. They have been a big part of racing in the Central New York area over the years, through Schmidt Trucking and through Gus and his racing at Brewerton, Fulton, and New Utica-Rome Speedways.

Cards, flowers, and well-wishes may be sent to Gus Schmidt Jr. and family to the hospital at the following address:

Gus Schmidt Jr.
Upstate Medical Center
6th Floor Intensive Car Unit Room 5
750 East Adams Street

More information will be released as soon as it becomes available.
