VERNON, NY -- Professional DIRT Motorsports stock car racing excitement returns to Utica-Rome Speedway this Sunday May 19. Scheduled in a regular race program full of family fun are the powerful 358-Modifieds as well as the Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks. Race time at the popular half-mile "Action Track of the East" is set for 6pm.
Former track champion Mitch Gibbs started the 2002 season in fine fashion as he claimed the win in the special main event on May 5. Gibbs would like nothing more than a victory this Sunday to ensure him an early season edge in the point standings. Just some of the top competitors other than Gibbs in contention this Sunday for the 30-lap feature win will be teenage sensation Matt Sheppard and the legendary Jack Johnson as well as Gordy Button, J.J. Michaels, Ryan Baye, Gus Schmidt, Steve Hulsizer, Aaron Excell, Jason Barney, John Ramsey, and Jim Rothwell.
Jamie Christian, Tim Clemons, and Kevin Crave look to rule the Sportsman ranks this season, as Bret Belden will look to defend his Pro Stock title from last year with stiff competition provided by newcomer Denny Smith, Jason Rood, and Wayne Archer. Dave Mannise will have his hands full this season as rival Jeff Thorp has returned to Pure Stock division. Over 100 DIRT Motorsports stock cars are expected for the fast paced four division show completed at an early hour to enable people to prepare for the upcoming work week.
Utica-Rome Speedway gates this Sunday May 19 will open at 4pm with racing beginning at 6pm when Starter Matt Burdick will throw the first green flag of the evening. Free parking and overnight camping is allowed on speedway grounds. The track is located on Route 5 in Vernon, just several miles off New York State Thruway Exit 33.
