VERNON, NY -- Professional DIRT Motorsports stock car racing competition continues this Sunday July 21 at Utica-Rome Speedway on Nice N' Easy Grocery Shoppes Night. Scheduled in an action packed race program on the fast half-mile clay oval are the 358-Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks. The Sportsman division will be featured with Twin 20's, including the rain delayed feature from June 16. Race time at the popular family fun track is set for 6pm.
The legendary Jack Johnson has been on a hot streak of late in the headline DIRT 358-Modified divison, with two wins in a row at the track partly owned during the 1985 season. Young Matt Sheppard continues to hold onto the point lead, but has yet to visit victory lane for the first time this season. Six different drivers have won to date including Todd Burley (2), Jack Johnson (2), Mitch Gibbs (1), Gus Schmidt (1), and Gordy Button (1), and Steve Hulsizer (1). Those drivers will be joined by J.J. Michaels, Ryan Baye, Jim Rothwell, Jason Barney, and John Ramsey along with others in search of a feature win this Sunday in the Nice N' Easy Grocery Shoppes 30-lap main event.
The DIRT Sportsman division will share some of the limelight this Sunday, with Twin 20-lap features, the first of which will be the rain delayed feature from June 16, which will be run right at 6pm before the qualifying heats. Tim Clemons, Jamie Christian, Kevin Crave, Paul Carey, Mike Button, and Jim Roberts will be all in contention for a victory, or maybe a sweep of the features. The Pro Stocks will feature Jason Rood, Bret Belden, Buddy Hencke, Bill Knapp, Joe Palmer, and Denny Smith all looking for the coveted feature win. Jim Thomas, Art Newman, Waylan Wilczek, and rival Jeff Thorp will all try to keep Dave Mannise out of the winner's circle in the Pure Stock ranks this Sunday.
The gates this Sunday July 21 at Utica-Rome Speedway on Nice N' Easy Grocery Shoppes Night will open at 4pm, with racing beginning promptly at 6pm. On average, over 100 cars participate in the race meets every Sunday, producing some of the most exciting three and four wide auto racing in the state on the multi-grooved track. The track is located on Route 5 in Vernon, just minutes off New York State Thruway Exit 33. For more information, contact the speedway office at (315) 829-4557 or log on to www.uticaromespeedway.com.
