Heavy thundershowers postpone Utica-Rome race action on Den Kelly Chevrolet night.
VERNON, NY -- All the heat races were completed last Sunday at Utica-Rome Speedway when the rains began falling on Den Kelly Chevrolet Night. The rains became heavier with thunder and lightning, forcing the postponement of the scheduled feature events.
The rain-delayed Sportsman and Pro Stock features will be run this Sunday August 4, while the 358-Modified and Pure Stock features will be completed on Sunday August 11. This sets up the fan favorite double features for those race nights, with the delayed features to be completed right at 6pm before the heats for the regularly scheduled racing. Normal admission prices will be in effect, making the next two race events bonus race programs. The popular Family Autograph Session will now be held on August 25.
Before the rains fell, Sportsman heat races were won by Daryl Hagen, Steve Way, and Paul Carey. Jeff Kotary, Gordy Button, and Dave Rauscher won the 358-Modified heat events. For Rauscher a sophomore driver, it was his first ever checkered flag. Pro Stock heat wins went to Jason Rood and Mark Effner. David Pope and Les Lewis were the Pure Stock heat winners.
Coming up this Sunday August 4 is Triple B Welding Night featuring the 358-Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks including the rain-delayed Sportsman and Pro Stock features from last week. In addition, it will be the popular "Night of Legends Reunion" as well as NYSSCA Safety Awards Night. Track gates will open at 4pm, and the postponed features will run off right at 6pm, with qualifying for the regularly scheduled races starting right after. Regular admission prices will be in effect this Sunday.
The speedway is located on Route 5 in Vernon, just minutes off New York State Thruway Exit 33. Free parking and overnight camping is allowed on speedway grounds. For more information, contact the track office at (315) 829-4557 or log on to www.uticaromespeedway.com.
PIT NOTES -- 23 Modifieds, 26 Sportsman, 17 Pro Stocks, and 17 Pure Stocks were on hand for the humid evening on Den Kelly Chevrolet Night. New Bicknell cars were debuted in the 358-Modified division by Mitch Gibbs, Aaron Excell, and Dave Rauscher. The best laptime of the evening (20.665) in the 358-Modified division was set by Gordy Button in heat 2. Jim Roberts had the fastest time in the Sportsman class (21.616) during the first heat.
