VERNON, NY - Professional DIRT Motorsports sanctioned racing continues this Sunday July 23 at the New Utica-Rome Speedway. Scheduled in a regular show sponsored by the Euclid Hotel and Schmidt Trucking are the DIRT 358 Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, and Pure Stocks, with race time set for 6pm.
Oneida's Ron Holmes, who is currently the point leader in the DIRT 358 Modified division, leads all drivers with two feature wins at the popular fast half-mile Vernon oval. J.J. Michaels, who has one win, is second in points, only twenty markers behind Holmes. Dale Planck sits in third, but the defending track champion has yet to win a feature. Gus Schmidt rests in fourth, and one time feature winner Andy Bachetti rounds out the top five. In addition, Danny Johnson, Todd Burley, and John Barker Jr. all have wins so far this season. Other drivers who will be looking for their first win of the season in the 30-lap feature event will be Tim Clemons, Mitch Gibbs, Jason Barney, Billy Wilcox, Ronnie Johnson, any many others.
West Winfield's Jamie Christian has won half of the DIRT Sportsman events run so far this season. Tony Ross, Willy Decker, and Paul Kinney each have one feature win apiece in the highly competitive division.
West Winfield's Jerry Holmes has cut into Tom Denton's DIRT Pro Stock point lead, with Bret Belden right behind in third. Denton, who has won half of the races this year, will be debuting a new car this Sunday. Will Denton be able to continue his winning ways with the new car or will a new winner grace victory lane?
Vernon's Chad Ray recently became the only guy to beat Dave Mannise in Pure Stock competition at Utica-Rome. Jeff Pastorella, Mark Effner, and Jim Thomas are running strong and could be the next to steal a win from Mannise.
The ESDCA Dwarf Cars were scheduled to compete at Utica-Rome on the new 3/10 mile short track being built. However, because of weather delays this show, and all remaining Dwarf Car shows scheduled for Utica-Rome this year have been cancelled. Speedway mangement regrets any inconveniences this has caused.
