VERNON, NY - Many of the cars and stars of the DIRT Motorsports sanctioned New Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon are heading to the 29th annual Super DIRT Week at the New York State Fairgrounds "Moody Mile" in Syracuse.
Led by Utica-Rome's 2000 358-Modified Track Champion Ron Holmes of Oneida, the speedway will have a handful of its top stars from its DIRT sanctioned divisions in action throughout the week and weekend. Holmes, a two-time winner this season at Utica-Rome, will be making his initial start on the Syracuse Mile in Saturday's Sunoco Race Fuels/A-Plus 150 lap 358-Modified Championship. Holmes is a guaranteed starter for the event courtesy of his win at Fonda Speedway on July 7.
Feature winners at Utica-Rome this year that will also compete in the 358-Modified Championship event on Saturday include opening night winner Andy Bachetti of Sheffield, MA, plus two-time winner Todd Burley of Spencerport, and one time winner Ronnie Johnson of Duanesburg. Also racing at Syracuse in the 358 Modified race will be Utica-Rome fourth place points finisher Billy Wilcox from Watertown. Bachetti, Burley, and Wilcox each have guaranteed starting spots for the event, which were won at various races on the 27 race Super DIRT Series.
Guaranteed starters that won their 358-Modified Super DIRT Week spots at Utica-Rome are Danny Johnson, John Barker Jr., and J.J. Michaels, but Barker and Michaels are not expected to attend.
Utica-Rome will also be represented on Sunday in the crown jewel of DIRT Motorsports competition, also known as the Eckerd 200 for the Big Block Modifieds. The rich $50,000 to win 200-lap race will feature Utica-Rome's only father and son team Jack and Ronnie Johnson along with Andy Bachetti and Todd Burley. Ronnie Johnson has already secured himself a spot in the event, by turning in the sixth fastest speed during Wednesday's time trials.
Chittenango's Ron Richardson and West Winfield's Jerry Holmes will also represent Utica-Rome in the UFPO "Dig Safely" Sportsman Championship and the ARANY Pro Stock Championship, respectively. Both drivers, who are many time feature winners at Utica-Rome, will be looking for their best Syracuse finishes, as both have had bad luck in the past.
Utica-Rome race fans are encouraged to follow their favorite drivers to Super DIRT Week 2000. For more information, including ticket availability, contact DIRT Motorsports at (315) 834-6606 and for up to the minute results and news, visit DIRT on the web at www.dirtmotorsports.com.
