40th Anniversary Celebration Plus Night Of Legends And Nyssca Hall Of Fame Night This Sunday August 19 At Utica-Rome Speedway
VERNON, NY -- The Utica-Rome Speedway will celebrate its 40th anniversary season this Sunday August 19 featuring the 2nd annual "Night of Legends Reunion" as well as the greatly anticipated New York State Stock Car Association (NYSSCA) Hall of Fame / Safety Awards Night. In thrilling race competition on the ultra fast half-mile will be the DIRT 358-Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Slingshots. Race time at the historic track is set for 6pm.
Todd Burley of Spencerport pretty much has his first career DIRT 358-Modified track championship locked up as only two point races remain at Utica-Rome for the headline class. Burley has visited victory lane no less than five times out of six different winners this season in truly a spectacular season for the popular pilot. The legendary Jack Johnson has three wins, followed by two wins for J.J. Michaels, and one win each for Danny Johnson, John Ramsey, and Mitch Gibbs. Other top drivers challenging for the huge 30-lap victory this Sunday include Ryan Baye, Jason Barney, Gus Schmidt, Paul Jensen, Roger Phelps, Ted Lamb, Ron Holmes, John Barker, Andy Romano, and Wayne Reutimann Jr.
Tim Clemons, Jamie Christian, and Willy Decker are locked in an intense battle for the DIRT Sportsman track championship, with Clemons having the upper hand. Jerry Holmes and Bret Belden are the two top contenders in the DIRT Pro Stocks, with Jeff Pastorella being the leader of the Pure Stock division and Denny Tilison the top driver in the Slingshots.
The 40th anniversary celebration of the speedway will take place throughout the evening, with a memorable night planned. NYSSCA will induct Sonny Seamon, Bernie Miller, and Jon Button into their prestigious Hall of Fame, as well as hand out their annual Safety Awards to the first NYSSCA member to cross the line in each division's feature. In addition, many race cars of the speedway's past including those of Sonny Seamon, Bernie Miller, Jon Button, Bill Wimble, and possibly many more surprises will be on hand in the midway area. A tent will be set up, with murals featuring old photos, programs, and even television footage of racing of the past at the speedway.
Retired competitors of the asphalt and dirt eras of the speedway are invited to attend the 40th anniversary celebration, which will include the "Night of Legends". Popular drivers of the past expected to be on hand include Bill Wimble, Rene Charland, Bernie Miller, and many, many more, as well as former speedway owner Dick Waterman. Utica-Rome Speedway gates on Sunday August 19 will open at 4pm, with racing taking the green from Starter Dick Sweet at 6pm. The track is located on Route 5 in Vernon and is easily accessible from New York State Thruway Exit 33. Free parking and overnight camping is allowed on speedway grounds.
