VERNON, NY -- Rain after the heat races on July 28 at Utica-Rome Speedway has set up a bonus race program this Sunday August 11 on Wilber-Duck Chevrolet Night. Double 358-Modified, Pro Stock, and Pure Stock features will highlight the exciting card. Also in race competition on the half-mile "Action Track of the East" will be the Sportsman division in a regular show. Race time at the popular family fun track is set for 6pm, with the rain-delayed features for 358-Modifieds and Pure Stocks beginning then before the qualifying rounds for the regularly scheduled program.
Young Matt Sheppard is on the verge of his first ever Utica-Rome track title in the headline 358-Modified division, but he has yet to win a feature. With double 30-lap features set for this Sunday, you can be sure that Sheppard will be in the hunt for victory as it will be an important night in the championship chase. Mitch Gibbs, Jack Johnson, Todd Burley, Gordy Button, Gus Schmidt, John Ramsey, Ted Lamb, Todd Burley, J.J. Michaels, Jason Barney, Ryan Baye and Jim Rothwell will challenge Sheppard in each feature for the coveted win. Overall, eight drivers have won to date, making it one of the most competitive seasons in track history.
Tim Clemons and Mike Button appear to be locked in a heated rivalry in the Sportsman division. With other top drivers including point leader Jamie Christian, Kevin Crave, Paul Carey, and Jim Roberts all looking to maintain their position in the standings, things could prove to be very interesting as we begin the last full month of the season. The Pro Stock division will compete in the regulary scheduled Twin 15's this Sunday, making it a busy night for sure. Bret Belden, Jason Rood, Denny Smith, Bill Knapp, and Buddy Hencke are locked in a tight Pro Stock point race, and any driver could walk away with the season title. Dave Mannise continues to hold the upper hand in the Pure Stocks, with Chuck Cushman, Art Newman, Ricky Trexler, and Jeff Thorp right behind.
