USPRO Cup Racing and Kalamazoo Speedway have announced that a 50 lap USPRO Cup event has been added to the 2003 USPRO and Kalamazoo Speedway schedule. The event, which also will be a benefit race, is to be held in honor of retired USPRO Race Director Chris Throgmartin. The race is scheduled for September 20th.
Throgmartin, a well known motorsport's marketing specialist from Michigan and a co-founder of USPRO Cup was diagnosed in 1999 with a rare and incurable bone marrow disease. Despite ongoing treatments since his diagnosis the disease has progressed and has entered the "spent phase" creating conditions that will require additional treatment from chemo type drugs. Throgmartin will undergo a bone marrow biopsy in addition to further drug treatments to see if a transplant is feasible. This race is being held to benefit a new foundation setup by Throgmartin " Stock Car Racers Foundation". USPRO drivers who attend the race are donating their winnings back to the Foundation in honor of Throgmartin.
"This is simply a wonderful honor. The officials, drivers and team members in USPRO are first class people and what they are doing to help me and others in racing is astounding, Throgmartin commented. I have always felt close to the series teams and drivers so I am making my travel plans to be there for the race. I can't wait to see the entire USPRO gang again as they have all become like a family to me," Throgmartin said from his retirement home in Bristol, TN.
The 50 lap feature event will be the series first stop at Kalamazoo during the 2003 season and its second swing into the Western part of Michigan.
"This race is special to all of us. It gives us the chance to give something back to a man that helped formulate and start USPRO Cup as well as give a huge boost to the new racers foundation as well. It also allows our drivers and teams to visit one of Michigan's premier race facilities. Kalamazoo is synonymous with good, hard, close racing. I know the teams are all excited and we are excited to be holding this event there".
