17-Year-Old Grabs Fourth Career Hooters ProCup Series Victory
Thomasville, NC Just a mere three days before his senior year of high school begins, 17-year-old Brian Vickers and BLV Motorsports captured their fourth career victory with the USAR Hooters ProCup Series in the Miller Lite 250 on Saturday, August 11th at Illiana Motor Speedway in Schererville, IN ( just outside the greater Chicago area). Vickers drove the #42 Stewart Components Chevrolet Monte Carlo to the hard fought victory by leading 68 laps and winning by a margin of .17 seconds over Mardy Lindley and Jeff Agnew.
Vickers started from the fourth position and stayed in the footsteps of early race leader Mardy Lindley. Brian battled with Lindley and breifly took the lead from him on lap 97, picking up 5 bonus points and was able to pass Mardy again on lap 123 to take the halfway money. Vic kers maintained the lead position until lap 162.
On lap 162, during a caution period, with only three cars on the lead lap, the leaders came in for pit stops. Jeff Agnew put on two tires while the #42 took on four. After the restart, Agnew, Brian, and Lindley respectively continued the torrid pace they had set during the early stages of the event. On lap 222, Vickers took the lead from Agnew and held off both Jeff and Mardy for the final 28 circuits to take the victory.
Vickers stated after the event, "What a day. We were way off in practice and didn't really feel we were where we needed to be when it ended. Patrick (Crew Chief Patrick Donahue) and the guys worked their tail off and never gave up. They did a heck of a job getting the car right for the race. Patrick even commented,ΠThat is the most I have ever changed on a race car during a three hour period."
Brian continued, "I believe we had a better car than both Mardy and Jeff on longer runs. We were about the same for the first couple laps after a restart. My hat's off to Jeff and Mardy. They both drove a clean hard race. They are great competitors and fun to race against. Hopefully, this will be a confidence booster going into the final two Northern Division races. We gained a little bit on Mardy, but still have our work cut out for us. You can't count out Jeff either. We just have to stay humble and with a little luck, we may be able to catch him for the Northern Division title. The bonus points going into the Championship events will be nice. It will be hard going into those events trailing a Hal Goodson or Booby Gill and Mardy Lindley or Jeff Agnew."
