Thomasville, NC - Brian Vickers and BLV Motorsports captured their fourth top-5 finish of the season this past Saturday night at New River Valley Speedway in Radford, Virginia with the USAR Hooters ProCup Series. Vickers finished in 3rd place behind seasoned veteran Bobby Gill and fellow rookie competitor Jon Wood.
Vickers qualified the #42 Food City Chevrolet Monte Carlo in the twelfth position. "We had more of a race set-up on the car. We should be better on longer runs than what we qualified," stated the 16-year-old after his 2-lap effort.
"At the beginning of the race the car was really good, and we were able to work our way into the top-5. We tried to get up with the leaders as quick as we could and then save our car for later in the race," stated Brian. Vickers was able to pit with the leaders and maintain good track position; "The guys on the crew did a heck of a job on our pit stop, and that helped us gain on our track position. Every week, the guys help us gain track position with great stops. That makes my life a lot easier." During the latter stages of the race, Vickers was able to run with Gill and Wood and bring the Food City Chevrolet home in third position. "We were good on long runs, plus we had a little bit of luck on our side late in the race, which never hurts either. I would just like to thank Ben Trout and all the people at Food City for working with us out tonight," stated Vickers.
Although the strong finish moved him into 6th in the overall series points standings, Vickers remained the only Chevrolet driver to capture a victory during the 2000 season. "We have been getting beat up on pretty bad by the Ford's this year. It was evident tonight again; our car was just as good, maybe even a little better than Bobby and Jon, but on restarts and down the straightways, we didn't stand a chance. We (Chevrolet's) are definitely at a disadvantage right now," stated Brian.
The USAR Hooters ProCup Pepsi / Kroger 250 will be aired on Speedvision Friday, July 28th at 8:00 pm. Brian and the BLV Motorsports crew will be back in action with the USAR on August 5th at Peach State Speedway in Jefferson, Georgia.
