FAULK LOOKS TO REBOUND AT SGMP
"Rookie Driver & Team Confident Heading Into Second Event"
OCALA, FLORIDA (March 9, 2005) -- Michael Faulk and his MB3 Motorsports team head north just across the Florida state line to compete this weekend in the first ever racing event held at the South Georgia Motorsports Park. Faulk, who is coming off a disappointing finish in the season opener at Lakeland, will pilot his #53 Herbalife Pontiac in the 250-lap event at the half-mile track located in Cecil, Georgia.
The 23-year-old rookie got a little bit of a head start on the track when he made some of the first laps at the facility during an open test session and media day two weeks ago. He would go on to post some of the fastest times recorded with his backup machine.
"The track is fun and it's definitely a two groove race track as you can run high and low," stated Faulk. "The surface has a lot of grip in it and the banking seems just right. Even with two grooves we may find it difficult to pass and I think that will produce some tight racing conditions. We practiced our backup car at the test and we did so well with it that we are going to go ahead and bring it back for the race -- it ran so well so it seems like the right thing to do."
South Georgia Motorsports Park is hosting their inaugural event this weekend at the track with the running of the Hooters Pro Cup 250. The half-mile, semi-banked paved oval facility just recently had its finishing touches put on it and is ready for its Grand Opening with this weekend's event. The track has already been nicknamed the "Irwindale (CA) Speedway of the East" and is sure to be a favorite for the Hooters Pro Cup Series.
"I am really looking forward to racing at SGMP," said Mike. "Being that the track is green it will put us all on equal playing ground. Not only am I a rookie this week, but all of the competitors are in the fact that no one has raced on this track. We were really good in the test here and I expect us to be just as strong this weekend. In the big picture of things, we need a nice clean race and to come home with a good finish."
Faulk and the rest of the Southern Division of the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series will roll into SGMP on Saturday for a full day of events. The field will qualify at 4:30 p.m. EST with the 250 lap race to see the green flag at 7:00 p.m. EST. You can watch the event on a tape delay basis on Saturday March 26th at 10:00 p.m. EST on the SPEED Channel.
