Montgomery, Ala. - Shane Huffman showed Saturday why he is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the USAR Hooters ProCup Series. The Hickory, N.C. driver consistently posted the quickest lap times in the afternoon practice session, and backed it up with a third place qualifying effort for the Naturally Fresh 250, presented by Food World, at the Montgomery Motor Speedway. As the green flag waved, Huffman and Team Johnsonville Racing seemed intent on making up for a season of misfortune with a strong run. For the first 83 laps, Huffman battled back and forth for the lead with Bill Plemons Jr., Mario Gosselin, and Bobby Gill, but was unable to get the run needed to put his Johnsonville Ford Taurus out front. Lap 100 saw the black cloud that has hung over this team all year move back in, as Huffman, now coasting in the top five, was suddenly fighting an ill-handling race car. By the time the team known as "The Brat Bunch" was able to get Huffman to pit road and make a chassis adjustment, during a lap 129 caution period, his #84 stood one lap down to the leaders. Huffman roared back to life, however, clocking lap times faster than the leader's, and clawing his way back to the front of the field for a shot at getting back on the lead lap. A yellow flag at lap 181 brought just that opportunity, and Huffman sat poised to take advantage when a cut tire on the lap 186 restart erased all hopes of challenging for the win and relegated the team to a 16th place finish. "There's not much else you can say about our luck this year," said a disappointed Huffman after the race. "We feel like we've hit on something with the changes the guys made to the car this week, and there were a lot of changes," Shane said, sounding more upbeat, "We'll know when we get to Greenville (Pickens) next weekend." Shane and Team Johnsonville Racing will be in action Saturday, September 23 when the USAR Hooters ProCup Series makes it's only visit of the season to the Greenville-Pickens Speedway, in Greenville, S.C., for the Hooters 250 Dan Duncan Memorial. Race time is 8:00 p.m.
