Joey Coulter Shows Promise at Southern National

Joey Coulter showed promise in the July 21 Naturally Fresh 250 USAR Hooters Pro Cup Southern Division event at North Carolina's Southern National Raceway Park.

The 17-year-old rookie from Miami Springs, Fla., put the Tempest Cycles/Darrell Gwynn Foundation Ford No. 02s solidly in the field with a 15th-place qualifying run.

"We had a really good car to start off with," Coulter said. "We were just getting in our rhythm and waiting on the air pressures to build to see what we had. We were running 12th and working our way toward the top 10 when the engine blew on lap 30."

Despite the engine failure, Coulter feels good about the performance and about how well he and new crew chief, Todd Myers, have worked.

"Todd's been great," Coulter said. "He was the crew chief for my driving coach, Randy Renfrow, in the Craftsman Truck Series."

Coulter is successful at every level of racing in which he's competed. The 2007 season is a building year for the team and driver. Besides working with a new crew chief, Coulter has also been racing a Late Model at Southern National and other tracks in an attempt to get seat time and prepare for his Pro Cup outings.

"I think we're going to run the Late Model race at Hickory this weekend," Coulter said.
