GREAT CLIPS DRIVER GABI DICARLO CAPTURES CAREER-BEST FINISH AT SOUTH BOSTON SPEEDWAY
MOORESVILLE, NC (AUGUST 8, 2006)--Great Clips driver Gabi DiCarlo competed in the Naturally Fresh 250 Hooters Pro Cup event at South Boston Speedway last Saturday, and she not only brought home a career-best 10th- place finish, but also the Miller Lite Rookie of the Race Award.
"We had such a great weekend in South Boston, and we are so thrilled to have our first top-10 finish," said DiCarlo. "It was just an awesome night, and the Great Clips crew gave me a great car. It was perfect all day, through practice, qualifying and the race. The whole crew is so excited that we're making progress and starting to move up through the point standings.
DiCarlo and her Stringer Motorsports team hit the track for a test session Wednesday leading up to Saturday's event. They not only received additional track time, but also confidence. DiCarlo ran as high as 12th position out of 34 highly competitive teams in practice. Although she posted only the 25-fastest time during qualifying, her laps were smoother- and faster-than her practice times.
"I am so proud of Gabi and the entire Great Clips team," said team owner Doug Stringer. "Gabi has made great strides, and the fact that she was able to pick up speed from her practice times for her qualifying laps tells me that she's working hard to improve out there. This top-10 finish was a great morale boost for everyone, and I can't wait to see how she wraps up the season."
Given that South Boston Speedway is only four-tenths of a mile, DiCarlo knew that cars in the back of the pack would get lapped pretty quickly once the green flag dropped. The team's goal was to fight hard and stay on the lead lap. DiCarlo's aggressive driving allowed her to pass many cars and even post laps as fast as the leaders.
With the checkered flag near, DiCarlo was running in 11th position, however due to her persistence, she was able to catch the 10th-place car and hold on for the first top-10 finish of her career.
"Even though we've had some rough races this season, the crew has stuck together and never stopped pushing forward," said DiCarlo. "We have all come together and worked hard together, and now our finishes are starting to show that. We have had great cars and setups and, they're behind me 100 percent. It's all starting to pay off for us, and I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season."
DiCarlo and the Great Clips Racing team will head to Madison, Wisconsin for the running of the Miller Lite 250 on August 19.
