Van Alst ready For return to USAR
Anderson, IN (Thursday June 19th, 2003) - - Greg Van Alst will return to the USAR competition this weekend from Salem Speedway after motor gremlins left the new United Speed Alliance Racing team with frustrations following their first event earlier this season.
In the team's first effort from Jennerstown Speedway, the team was baffled after battling an engine problem all weekend. However, The team hopes to turn their luck around this weekend. "We're heading to Salem this weekend to show everyone we're here to race," said Van Alst.
After qualifying a distant 31st for their first race of the season, their race did not last all but six laps as mechanical failure halted the team's effort forcing them to retire from the event. "Jennerstown was a total disappointment for the Van Alst Motorsports team," said the former Sunoco Superseries driver.
Greg, heads to Salem Speedway with a little confidence on his side as he competed at the short track last year in the ARCA RE/MAX Series. Van Alst drove the No. 01 Robert Locke Motorsports Pontiac in that event.
"I like Salem, we had a little bit of a hiccup last year, but we were still able to race with the best of them and I think that having a little bit of experience at Salem can be very beneficial to me," he added.
While the team has not announced their full USAR schedule for the year, the 21 year old driver knows he wants to be impressive this weekend. "I arrived in this series this year with one goal in mind, Win!"
The Van Alst Motorsports team is still looking for a primary sponsor in order to compete in more races despite bringing Thermtech Systems back this weekend.. "We absolutely thrilled to have Thermtech Systems onboard this No. 35 Pontiac this weekend," he mentioned.
"Thermtech has spent a lot of interest in my career and I just want to give them a good showing to prove to them, they picked the right driver."
Greg feels that the motor problems that team dealt with earlier this year have been corrected and will have the horsepower to compete this weekend. "We've spent a lot of time making sure this engine was right, it was an embarrassment to me and the team to have problems right off the bat, because we are better than that."
The main goal for the team this weekend?
"We want to go out and be competitive as soon as we roll off the trailer. "From the first practice session, till we take the checkered flags I want everyone to know that we were at Salem Speedway.
The Naturally Fresh Foods 250 is set for this Saturday June 21st. It will be the second USAR (Northern) event for the Van Alst Motorsports team this season. The green flag is scheduled to fall shortly after 7:00pm EST. The event will be tape delayed on the SPEED channel.
