Cameron Dodson Scores Career-Best Finish at Radford
USAR Hooters Pro Cup Rookie Contender Powers to Seventh Place on Way to Rookie of the Race Award
Radford, VA - It may not have been the straightest, most efficient route to the top-10, but Cameron Dodson kept his focus in place and his game face on to overcome a late race spin and charge to a seventh-place career-best finish in the Kroger 250 Presented by Dominic's of New York. The 250-lap/104 mile race was number nine of the 2006 season for the United Speed Alliance Racing (USAR) Hooters Pro Cup Northern Division and held at Motor Mile Speedway, Radford Virginia.
On lap 180, the 17-year old rookie contender was running in the ninth position after having started 25th in his No.14N May's Motorsports Elite Collision Center DuPont Performance Coatings Joie of Seating Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The completion of the race drastically changed when another competitor suffered a tire problem directly in front of him.
Dodson's choice was to either hit the other car, or spin and try to save them both. The savvy young driver chose to try and save both race cars by spinning. His efforts netted the desired result, but put Dodson back in the running order on the restart with just over 60 laps remaining.
With a good and undamaged car under him, Dodson went back to work to regain the positions lost. He did more than that, moving up to seventh in the order when the checkered flag flew.
The top-10 finish netted Dodson the Rookie of the Race Award and his superb driving to overcome the obstacle of the spin garnered him the Hard Charger Award of the race.
Dodson's cool, calm approach to the setback earned him accolades from fellow competitors.
"It felt great running up front with guys line Benny Gordon, Clay Rogers and Johnny Rumley," said Dodson. "Lee McCallister and my crew gave me an awesome car for the race and they had an excellent pit stop. It was the kind of night we have been working hard all season to have. I am just happy for everyone involved with this program.
"Having Johnny, Benny and Gary St. Amant come down and compliment me on my run afterwards felt really good. I have tremendous respect for all of the guys and know by racing against them, it will help make me be a better stock car driver. Every time I go out on the track, I know I am competing against the best so tonight's finish is pretty sweet for me and everyone on our team."
SPEED TV will show the race in its entirely on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at 4:00 p.m. EDT.
The next event for the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Northern Division will be July 29, 2006 at Salem Speedway, Salem Indiana.
