Southern Finale Brimming with Excitement
Longs, SC - When checkered flag falls on the Southern Division regular season at USA International Speedway on September 4, the Southern Division champion will be crowned, but the 250 laps leading up to the crowning will be etched with excitement.
No less than three drivers will head into the Jackaroo Sauces 250 presented by Advance Discount Auto Parts with a chance to take the $25,000 prize for being the Southern Division Champion, setting the stage for a memorable evening of racing action.
One of the drivers in the thick of the title chase is Bobby Gill, and that may not be good news for championship contenders.
Gill gets around the .750-mile track like he owns it, picking up nine wins in 21 starts. More importantly, Gill, a three-time ProCup champion, won the last time the Hooters ProCup was in action at the Lakeland, Fla., track on June 5.
Gill made his way around race leader and point leader Clay Rogers on Lap 168 and led to the finish of the Naturally Fresh 250 presented by Advance Discount Auto Parts at USA Int'l Speedway in June.
"I feel like we're getting back to where we were," said Gill after his win at USA Int'l earlier this season. "It's hard now because I'm basically doing this by myself. I've got some good help, like Mark Huff and the crew that helps at the race track, but that's about it."
However, much has changed for Gill since June. Gill has added two wins -and a new team.
The veteran driver took over the No. 06 USG Sheetrock Brand Ford fielded by Lamb and Robinson Motorsports that was previously driven by Joe Gaita. Combined with Gill's talent and L&R's resources, the pairing went to victory lane in their first start.
"We felt like we needed to make some changes, and we've brought on Bobby Gill to finish out the season," said team owner James Mosley. "Joe and I go back a pretty good ways, but we felt like we needed to make a change to find out where we stand, and Bobby was the perfect choice."
Though Gill will carry the favorite tag into the Jackaroo Sauces 250, Clay Rogers and Shane Huffman have also won at USA Int'l in the last calendar year.
Huffman clinched the 2003 Hooters ProCup Championship last November at USA Int'l and is coming off a win at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Rogers took the win in the season opener at USA Int'l and finished second to Huffman at Bristol.
Ironically, Rogers and Huffman will be the ones trying to wrap up the Southern Division Championship as well, making for a climactic crescendo. With his second-place showing at Bristol, Rogers now leads Gill by 82 points heading into the Southern Division finale. Huffman is just 88 points behind Rogers.
The Jackaroo Sauces 250 presented by Advance Discount Auto Parts is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start time on September 4.
