Huffman wins, McFarland finishes third on a sizzling day
Mooresville, NC- On a day that many drivers agree was the hottest they have ever been in a race car, perhaps the hottest topic leaving USA International Speedway was the tight points race.
Mark McFarland brought his No. 32 WINFUEL Chevrolet home in third place in Sunday's running of the Naturally Fresh 250 presented by Advance Discount Auto Parts and moved himself up to sixth in points, just three points out of fifth and 58 points behind leader Shane Huffman.
Rain washed out all of Saturday's scheduled activities so the cars were lined up by points on Sunday; therefore McFarland took the green flag from the eighth position. He fought a tight-handling race car for much of the first half of the race and came down pit road on Lap 122 in seventh position.
"That was definitely the hottest race I have ever run in my life. The car was just really tight in dirty air, but my pit crew put me out in front and I did my best from there," said McFarland.
The WINFUEL crew knocked of a blazing 18.00-sec. pit stop to get McFarland out in front of everyone. He was at the end of pit road before anyone else had left their pit stall. From there he managed to lead 54 laps before succumbing to Huffman, who was in a class by himself all day long. He then waged a spirited battle with the No. 13 car of Toby Porter before bringing his JR Motorsports entry home third.
"We are coming more and more together every race. That light at the end of the tunnel is as bright as the sun right now. We are really close," sounded McFarland.
Crew chief Jefferson Hodges agrees.
"We didn't give Mark the best race car today, but to see our pit crew get him out front like that tells me that we are starting to gel. Now is a great time to start clicking with the regular season turning toward the second half," said Hodges.
Tune to the Speed Channel on Saturday, June 11 for the broadcast of the Naturally Fresh 250 presented by Advance Discount Auto Parts from USA International Speedway.
